Alicante Folklore & Ghost Stories from Santa Bárbara Castle High above Alicante, Santa Bárbara Castle sits on the peak of Mount Benacantil, its walls steeped in stories and legends. For as long as locals have been telling tales, they’ve whispered that this fortress is far more than stone and battlements. It is a place where…

There are moments on a trip when reality tilts—just slightly—and something small, strange, and inexplicably perfect slips through the cracks of the ordinary. Mine happened halfway up the historic path to Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante. I was already out of breath. The climb up the steep, sun-baked street was narrow and unforgiving, a proper…

From the tram station, Puig Campana rises over Benidorm like a silent, brooding sentinel. At first glance, its sheer bulk dominates the skyline, but it is a single, dramatic feature near its summit that immediately arrests the eye: a conspicuous, jagged gap known locally as El Portell — “The Gate.” This wound in stone, later…

Seeking the Odd in the Ordinary: A Benidorm Expedition

Some journeys are chosen for their mystery. Others are chosen because your child turns eighteen and I wanted to mark the occasion with her first trip abroad. Benidorm was never on my personal map of dream destinations, but this trip isn’t about ticking off a place — it’s about being there for a milestone, even…

    72 Hours in Krakow, Poland

My introduction to Krakow began immediately with a taste. Moments after landing, I bought a warm obwarzanki—that dense, chewy, sesame-studded, bagel-like ring—and ate it on the bus journey into the city centre. The simple, bready warmth was the first sensory anchor. Stepping off, the morning light became the second: a pale, soft gold washing over…

Kraków: The City of Pigeons and Other Small Sorceries

I hadn’t expected to go to Kraków. The idea came from an unexpected source: my hairdresser. We were chatting about travel, and she told me how her sister finds cheap flights and each month disappears somewhere new — she doesn’t care much where, she’s just after the adventure of experiencing a new place. Then she…

    Haunted Cartographies

When I was a little girl, I would sit cross-legged on the carpet with an atlas spread open before me. I treated it like a storybook, tracing the blue lines of rivers and the winding veins of mountain ranges with a fingertip. I memorised bolden cities and each name — Samarkand, Valparaíso, Reykjavik — shimmered…

    72 hours in Sorrento, Italy

Sorrento met me with a distinct sense of immediate, effortless intensity. The air carried the sharp scent of citrus and salt, a mix that felt both ancient and invigorating. The sound of scooters slicing through the tangle of narrow streets provided the soundtrack against the pastel-coloured walls. Looking down from the clifftop, the Bay of…

Wandering, Wondering, and the Art of Getting Lost

I’ve always had a knack for getting lost. Even with a map, even with GPS chirping directions, I somehow end up wandering down side streets, following strange doorways, or detouring through alleys lined with forgotten shopfronts. For a long time, I thought it was just my poor sense of direction. But over the years, I’ve…

Accidentally bumped into the Louvre while walking Accidentally bumped into the Louvre while walking to somewhere completely different. Was following a French revolution walking tour on an app - it should have taken about 2 hours but we did it in 5! Step counter hit 32k and I have blisters to show for it. Had the best of times.

Happy New Year! Traditional walk by the sea done Happy New Year!

Traditional walk by the sea done (oh my word, it's cold and windy out there!) and now to settle down to a few board games indoors.

I hope you have the very best 2026 and let it be filled with all kinds of delicious magic.
Back in the soggy UK after a beautiful few days in Back in the soggy UK after a beautiful few days in Girona. Renewing my passport this year was one of the best decisions - I've seen some gorgeous places (all that I had never visited before) and have fallen even more in love with our little planet.

I've spent the last few days exploring the medieval town (including ticking off GOT locations), finding little cafes with the best coffee (and pastries) and generally walking until my feet could take no more. Perfect!
